Fairloom’s main goal is to have students and professionals from the global community learn how to foster social justice in their own communities. We believe in a very hands-on approach and welcome individuals, students, and university groups to Terra Prometida. Students and graduates from Brown University, NYU, Westmont College, and Umass Dartmouth have interned in Terra Prometida. This Spring, a fashion design course from Massachusetts College of Art and Design will work, learn, eat, dance, and sleep in hammocks in the community for 2 weeks. The artisans welcome these visits. One woman said, “The students make me feel like I am worth the traveling, time, and money to get here.”
Terra Prometida’s artisans are becoming more self-sufficient every day. After they are fully able to sustain their group with only funds from sales, a percentage of profit will help develop education programs for the community. This method will enable the artisans to see that the power of positive change comes from within.
Fairloom has a global program of communications called Building Connections. Children in Providence, RI, Jackson Hole, WY, and Terra Prometida, Brazil are sharing their stories and day-to-day lives as they learn about each other and discover themselves further. We will be documenting their exchanges and posting it here.
