In 2007, we altered our mission to focus on creating a learning community where young people in the United States and Brazil work together. Those involved are gaining the skills and knowledge necessary to foster social justice as they build a sustainable education and economic foundation for the community of Terra Prometida, Brazil.

Graduates and students from Brown University and NYU were interns in Terra Prometida in 2007. We are looking forward to a three month stay from two young designers/entrepreneurs in 2008. This June, a fashion design course from Massachusetts College of Art and Design will work, learn, eat, dance, and sleep in hammocks in the community for 2 weeks! The artisans welcome these visits. One woman said, “The students made me feel like I am worth the traveling, time, and money to get here.”

Terra Prometida’s artisans are becoming more self-sufficient. Two women have embarked on a technology course, others are taking a fashion design course, and everyone is learning the business aspects of being an artisan. They have even started to host their own fundraisers!

Our sales are steadily increasing and with your continued support and purchases, we will be on target for our 2012 goal of covering 80% of our operating costs through sales.

Fairloom focuses on every individual involved in our programs—and we keep the organization small enough so that every board member, director, artisan, and child can feel connected to each other. We are enabling the spirit of Terra Prometida to transcend the borders of their neighborhood. We hope it continues to spread and reaches you.
